It was a successful weekend for Kajetan Kajetanowicz (PL): The 40-year-old Pole and his co-driver Maciej Szczepaniak (PL) were able to join in the podium celebrations at the Rally Corsica, courtesy of third place in the WRC2 class in their Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. Three-time European rally champion Kajetanowicz was making his first appearance in the Polo GTI and will start at seven rounds of the World Rally Championship in the 2019 season.
While the experienced Pole enjoyed a successful debut, the remaining Volkswagen drivers were not so fortunate at the Rally Corsica, which proved a real test for both man and machine: Ole Christian Veiby (N) and Jonas Andersson (S) were forced to retire shortly before the end of stage 13 after losing a wheel. Frenchmen Nicolas Ciamin and Yannick Roche (THX Racing Team) suffered steering problems just before the start of stage nine, which also resulted in their retirement. Eric Camilli (F) and François-Xavier Buresi (F), who led the WRC2 class for much of the rally and won ten special stages, had to abandon their car due to a fire.
Kajetan Kajetanowicz, Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 #35 : « A great start to our first WRC season. Every kilometre was a joy and we gained a lot of experience. I am becoming more and more confident with the car, which is a good sign for the future. The Rally Corsica was a great challenge, I can still feel the adrenalin now. At 47 kilometres, the ninth special stage was the longest I have driven so far. We are happy with our success, which is a credit to the whole team. »
