Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup: Babini, Zampieri and Niederhauser present Attempto Racing with its second points finish of the season

AD3U6843Attempto Racing finished in the points for the second time this season at the fourth race weekend of the Blancpain GT Series, which took place at the British Grand Prix circuit in Silverstone. Italians Fabio Babini (46) and Daniel Zampieri (25), together with Swiss driver Patric Niederhauser (24) finished an excellent tenth in the number 101 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 after three hours of racing. This saw Zampieri and Niederhauser repeat their result from April’s opening round of the season in Misano.

Following Sunday morning’s qualifying session, the trio started the race from 19th place. Start driver Babini gained three positions on the opening lap and climbed as high as twelfth at one point. After the first driver change-over, Zampieri continued the progress through the field to move into tenth. Niederhauser re-joined the race in twelfth place after the second pit stop, before mounting a strong assault in the final stages of the race. He first moved into eleventh place, before a safety car period brought him within range of the points positions. With 13 minutes of the race remaining, he climbed into tenth place and held on to finish in this position.

In contrast, the race was all but over after a matter of metres for Dutch duo Max van Splunteren (29) and Jeroen Mul (25) and Belgian Louis Machiels (45). Van Splunteren had to come straight into the pits with a puncture on the rear-right of the number 100 Lamborghini Huracán GT3, following a collision on the opening lap. However, having changed the tyre, damaged parts of the chassis continued to rub on the tyre. It was consequently necessary to pull in for another unscheduled stop, in order to rectify the issue. This saw the trio, which had started from 28th place, plummet to the back of the field, which consisted of over 50 cars. They eventually came home 44th.

Clément Mateu (France), Jürgen Häring (Germany) und Nicolas Armindo (France) in the number 77 Porsche 911 GT3 were struck by misfortune in qualifying on Saturday. Armindo was hit by an opponent and crashed heavily into a wall. The trio was unable to take part in Sunday’s qualifying, as the car could not be repaired in time.

“We took a big step forward in Silverstone. Above all, our qualifying performance really improved. We have always done well in the race itself. I am pleased with the top-ten finish in the endurance race. My drivers in the Super Trofeo also did a very good job,” said Arkin Aka, Managing Director of Attempto, summing up the weekend.

In the Lamborghini one-make cup, the Super Trofeo, Jürgen Krebs (Germany) is currently seventh in the amateur standings after four races, while Tim Müller (Germany) lies 13th. The father/son pairing of Dirg Parhofer/Dimitri Parhofer (Germany) struggled with technical issues at the weekend, meaning they left Silverstone empty-handed.

The Blancpain GT Series continues on 24th/25th June, when the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet (France) hosts the third Endurance race of the season. Races five and six of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo will also feature on the support programme.
