Swiss motor racing talent Fabio Scherer is targeting a confident start to his 2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship campaign when it gets underway in Spain this weekend.
The 19-year-old is proudly representing the Sauber Junior Team this season as part of an exciting collaboration that connects him with Sauber Motorsport, the Swiss organisation that runs the Alfa Romeo Racing team in Formula 1.
Having spent the winter busily preparing for the biggest season of his career to date, Fabio is excited by the prospect of taking his Sauber Junior Team by Charouz car into battle at Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya this weekend.
The first of eight F3 events that will run alongside selected F1 Grands Prix, Fabio will take part in two races at the 4.65km track – the home of the Spanish Grand Prix.
« All of the homework has been done since testing ended and it should be fine this weekend. This is a race weekend to get confident and get into the rhythm and to try and finish both races, » he explained.
« I think I should be able to drive in the top-ten and I want points finishes in the races. If you are around seventh or eighth in the first race, you are on the front row of the grid for race two. That’s very useful. »
But with 29 other junior drivers lining up alongside Fabio on the newly-formed and highly-competitive FIA F3 Championship grid this season, he is aware that success will have to be earned in 2019.
« I think the F3 field will be one of the hardest – probably even tougher than Formula 2, » he said. « There is probably eight drivers that can win the F3 title this year. For sure, the competition is going to be fierce, but that’s what drives me forward and motivates me. I want to race in a championship like that. »
Fabio’s race weekend will get underway on Friday with a morning practice session that will be followed by an early evening qualifying session. The Stobag-supported driver, a podium finisher in the F3 category during 2018, wants to make a fast start when the on-track action begins.
Having not raced since the final round of the FIA F3 European Championship in October last year, Fabio knows he’ll have to keep his excitement and emotions in check when the timed sessions start in Spain.
He said: « I’m desperate to get back on the track and go racing. It’s been seven months since my last race – that’s the longest time in my career. I have to be careful with that and control my emotions. Taking a measured approach will be vital to get the best results. »
