DTM – Timo Glock wins race at Spielberg on Sunday

#16 Timo Glock, BMW M4 DTMFor the third time in his career, Timo Glock was able to celebrate on the top step of the podium: in Sunday’s second DTM race at Spielberg in Austria, the BMW driver emerged as the winner. After 42 laps of the 4.326 kilometres long Red Bull Ring, Glock won from the two Audi drivers Mattias Ekström and Jamie Green, who finished second and third respectively. Daniel Juncadella was the best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver in Styria, he was classified twelfth.

For Glock, things were going well from the very beginning: on lap two already, he overtook Green for the lead and only briefly had to give it up after the pit stop. Mattias Ekström showed great progress. Having started from eleventh place on the grid, he was the last driver to turn into the pits for a tyre change. With a good race strategy by his team and fast lap times, the two times’ DTM champion managed to work his way up to finish second. Just like Ekström, Gary Paffett was able to move up through the ranks, too: from 21st place on the grid, he advanced to eleventh position with his eyes set on a point-scoring finish. His efforts remained unrewarded: on the final lap, he prepared for a move to overtake Timo Scheider, had to escape through the grass and dropped back to 13th.

After four of the season’s 18 races, Mercedes-Benz driver Paul Di Resta (43 points) remains in the lead of the drivers’ standings after finishing 15th in the race on Sunday. Edoardo Mortara is second in the drivers’ standings with 40 points from race winner Timo Glock and Maxime Martin (both 37 points). Mortara retired on lap 25 after a collision with António Félix da Costa in the battle for third.

In a fortnight, from June 3 till 5, 2016, the DTM has its fifth and sixth race of the season during the Motorsport Festival at the Lausitzring.
