Supercars – Kelly Racing searching for the Symmons sweet spot

Kelly Racing’s four drivers are confident that they can find improvements after a day of learning at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania today.

Castrol Racing’s Rick Kelly was the best of the Kelly cars, finishing the two sessions in 11th and 15th respectively. Plus Fitness Racing’s Andre Heimgartner improved the speed of his Nissan between sessions, ending up 17th and 13th in the two sessions. Team Harvey Norman driver Simona de Silverstro was 24th and 18th in the two sessions, which included a wild spin at the front straight in the second session. Rookie Supercars driver Garry Jacobson is looking for more speed after finishing the day 23rd and 25th in his RABBLE.Club Nissan. Track action resumes tomorrow with Practice 3 at 11:10am, followed by qualifying at 1:50pm and Race 7 at 4:40pm.

QUOTES

Rick Kelly #15 Castrol Racing : « We started with a really solid car at the start of Practice 1 when the track was pretty green. On the older tyres, the car was pretty balanced. As the track grip has come up through the day and we’ve worked our way to a better set of practice tyres, the balance has unfortunately moved away from us a little and pushed us outside the critical top 10. It’s not where we want to be and a little disappointing given how striong we started the weekend. We just need to have a look and see how we can adapt. »

Andre Heimgartner #7 Plus Fitness : « Not bad overall, but just ran out off time too use the tyres that we wanted. We had to jump onto greens earlier than we wanted, so it was a big shift from the old sets that we were on. There’s still a bit in it, but overall, I’m feeling positive. We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see where we are. »

Simona De Silvestro #78 Team Harvey Norman : « It was a bit of a struggle this morning because we had a starter motor problem so we couldn’t get our full program complete. We tried a few different things and I got my heart-rate up with a big spin on the front straight. In the end, it’s OK. We were a bit rushed but we really learned a lot and tomorrow we are going to be better. »

Garry Jacobson #3 RABBLE.Club : « I don’t feel we made the changes that I needed, but the beauty of this team is that we have three other drivers who are doing a good job. That is going to help me get on top, so I’m looking forward to talking to the other drivers and seeing what they feel and see what I can learn. If I was in a single-car team, it would be a struggle, because I’d have no bench mark, but I’m lucky I’ve got plenty of information to look at and I know that I’ll be able to use that to improve. »
