Supercars – Heimgartner the best of the Kelly cars in fraught final race

Andre Heimgartner has finished an encouraging 14th after a frenetic final race at the Albert Park street circuit today.

After a difficult qualifying session for this race, the Plus Fitness Racing Kiwi started from the rear of the field and roared his way past 10 cars to claim 14th. Team Harvey Normal star Simona De Silvestro was involved in a number of close battles, making her way from 21st to finish 17th.

RABBLE.Club rookie Garry Jacobson finished 18th, just behind De Silvestro. Jacobson also had a wild race, clashing with Macaulay Jones who tried to aggressively block Jacobson on the exit of Turn 13. Jones ended up collecting the wall heavily. Castrol Racing’s Rick Kelly slipped down the order during the 13 lap race, crossing the line in 21st place.

The next round of the Supercars Championship sends the field across the Tasman Sea to Symmons Plains Raceway for Races 7 and 8 of the championship in two weeks time.

QUOTES

Andre Heimgartner #7 Plus Fitness : « Considering what we’ve been through this weekend and the choice to run old tyres in the last race, i’m really happy with that result. I got a great start, I was able to pick my line and make a few spots as the race went on. It was as good as we could expect starting from where we did, so i’m really happy with that and to earn a good bank of points moving forward to Tasmania. »

Simona De Silvestro #78 Team Harvey Norman : « The car was much better today than we’ve had all weekend, even considering the older tyres we were on for that last race, so that’s really positive. We learnt a lot this weekend experimenting with our setup throughout the weekend, but today was definitely a step in the right direction. Symmons Plains is quite a different track but anytime we learn something is a positive and a step forward for the team. »

Garry Jacobson #3 RABBLE.Club : « It was a pretty hectic race today. We went further away on our setup from what we had yesterday and struggled with pace. It was a tough weekend but we’re looking forward to coming back stronger in Tasmania. »

Rick Kelly #15 Castrol Racing : « We shifted the car from what we learned with the other cars across the weekend, in particular [Andre] Heimgartner’s car from yesterday, and it felt much nicer. We elected to run the tyres from the previous races so we could leave here with a decent set of tyres to capitalise with when we have a good package. That made the race today really difficult, but even though the tyres were quite old the car felt good compared to yesterday. We can leave here with some learnings and tune the car up for the next round in Tasmania. »
