Fabio Scherer missed the goal of scoring points during the fourth DTM race weekend at Assen/Netherlands. And this despite the fact that he attracted a lot of attention in Saturday’s race with the fastest race lap and a very good race pace.
DTM – Assen: Too much risk in the wet
« I’m disappointed with both qualifying sessions, » says Fabio. « I already had trouble on Friday. Especially in the second sector. There I lost way too much time. It was similar in the first qualifying. P16 on the grid was not what I expected. After the first race on Saturday I thought that it would go better in Sunday’s qualifying. It went better as well. At least the gap was smaller than on Saturday. But we didn’t get the front tyres up to temperature. And again, in the end, I was P15 on the grid. »
With a good start, Scherer, who is supported by STOBAG and ATS Banding Systems, was able to improve quickly in the first corners. Fabio also had a much better feeling in race trim. Unfortunately, a contact with another competitor then led to a drive-through penalty for Scherer which meant that the driver from WRT Team Audi Sport was at the back of the field.
« It’s annoying when you set the fastest race lap of all 16 drivers and at the end you do not take profits out of it, » said DTM rookie Scherer, who was the only driver who crossed the pitlane twice.
In the dry qualifying on Sunday morning, Fabio claimed P15 with a gap of only three tenths of a second to teammate Harrison Newey, who set the ninth fastest time. As the gaps in the DTM are extremely narrow, this meant that the grid position was P15 again. Massive rain delayed the start by ten minutes.
« I didn’t get a good start, » says Fabio. « But I still managed to make up two positions in the first few corners. Because the track dried out, we risked changing to slicks at the pitstop. But the weather changed again. And I lost the car on the straight. The impact was pretty violent. And there will be some bruises. But I’m okay. »Scherer now wants to forget the weekend in Assen as quickly as possible. Already on Friday the DTM will continue its season on the Grand Prix circuit at the Nurburgring with the races 9 and 10.
