DTM – Spa: No points, but best rookie

Fabio Scherer narrowly missed the points in his DTM debut. The 21-year-old rookie, who is supported by STOBAG and ATS Banding System, finished 12th in each of the opening races of Europe’s most popular touring car series at Spa-Francorchamps (B). This means that Scherer who drives for WRT Team Audi Sport was the best rookie twice.

But not everything went according to plan. In the first 20-minute qualifying session, Scherer had to cope without DRS at some stages. « On the long straights here at Spa, this certainly cost me one second per lap, » says Scherer. « Besides, I made another mistake on my fastest lap. »

Having started the first race from 12th position on the grid, Scherer soon had to deal with an unpleasant problem. « Somewhere gasoline was leaking, » says Scherer. « The fumes made me dizzy. Only towards the end of the race it was getting better. But it wasn’t easy to drive like that. »

Also in the second qualifying on Sunday morning not everything went smoothly. « We didn’t really get off the ground. I lost too much time on the straight. That’s a pity. We were better than 14th on the grid and have to analyse this again. »

Thanks to a very good start, Scherer was still clearly on course for points in the second race. But the youngest driver in the field was not able to save P8. « The first part of the race went great. I drove up from 14th position to 8th. But then we got a little bit strategically mixed up. And in the end the tyres were gone. I couldn’t defend myself like that anymore. »

Scherer nevertheless draws a positive conclusion after the first race weekend: « We still have to improve in qualifying. That’s clear. But the basis is good. And we can be satisfied so far. I was the best rookie at Spa. And I didn’t make any serious mistakes. At the next race on Lausitzring, I want to make up for the points I missed here. I’m looking forward to these races and would like to thank my sponsors and all the team members who have done a great job under difficult conditions like we have with COVID-19. »
