\nPrendre le volant d\u2019une Bentley est toujours un moment privil\u00e9gi\u00e9. Porte ouverte, il y a d\u2019abord cette odeur particuli\u00e8re \u00e9manant du cuir garni \u00e0 la main reconnaissable entre mille. Il y a ensuite le moment o\u00f9 l\u2019on y entre en prenant soin de ne pas salir le seuil en aluminium anodis\u00e9 estampill\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0W12 S\u00a0\u00bb. Puis le r\u00e9glage des si\u00e8ges, de la direction, des r\u00e9troviseurs\u2026 Tout ce qu\u2019on fait habituellement en roulant, ou au mieux lors du prochain arr\u00eat feu rouge. Au volant d\u2019une Bentley, le temps s\u2019arr\u00eate malgr\u00e9 nous, mais sans que l\u2019on ressente la moindre contrainte. C\u2019est comme si elle nous prenait notre temps. Mais de quelle mani\u00e8re va-t-elle nous le rendre\u00a0? Voici quelques \u00e9l\u00e9ments de r\u00e9ponse apr\u00e8s 6 jours d\u2019essai et 772 photos.<\/p>\n

\nAvant de quitter l\u2019agence de Bentley Lausanne, j\u2019ai pris soin d\u2019emporter le catalogue du mod\u00e8le qui me concerne\u00a0: la Flying Spur. Cette berline de 5,3 m\u00e8tres se place entre la Continental<\/a> \u00a0\u2013 Le coup\u00e9 Bentley par excellence \u2013 et la Mulsanne, plus luxueuse encore, qui existe m\u00eame dans une version \u00ab\u00a0Extended Wheelbase<\/a>\u00a0\u00bb de 5,9 m\u00e8tres que nous avons pu tester l\u2019ann\u00e9e pass\u00e9e<\/a>. De retour \u00e0 la maison, je consulte ce livre de 123 pages afin de \u00ab\u00a0prendre la temp\u00e9rature\u00a0\u00bb de ce qui m\u2019attend, mais aussi pour me rem\u00e9morer tout le soin apport\u00e9 \u00e0 la fabrication de ces voitures d\u2019exception que sont les Bentley. On y apprend notamment que les angles nets surplombant ses flancs sont le fruit d\u2019une op\u00e9ration de superformage, consistant \u00e0 chauffer l\u2019aluminium \u00e0 500 degr\u00e9s avant d\u2019\u00eatre form\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019air comprim\u00e9. A l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, 17 teintes de cuir et 8 types de placages viennent compl\u00e9ter les 106 couleurs disponibles pour la carrosserie\u2026 \u00e0 moins que vous ne pr\u00e9f\u00e9riez cr\u00e9er la v\u00f4tre\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Le lendemain, les r\u00e9jouissances peuvent commencer. Comme la neige est annonc\u00e9e au Marchairuz, nous n\u2019allons pas rater cette occasion de jauger les facult\u00e9s de \u00ab l\u2019une des meilleures tractions int\u00e9grales du monde \u00bb selon Bentley. Sur le trajet, S\u00e9bastien pestera sur l\u2019absence de port USB pour recharger la cam\u00e9ra. Il y a pourtant 5 prises 12 V allume-cigare (dont une dans le coffre), mais il faudra se procurer un adaptateur pour recharger un appareil USB. Pas non plus de cam\u00e9ra 360 degr\u00e9s, de feux longue port\u00e9e automatiques, ni encore moins de base de recharge sans fils\u2026 On dirait bien que Bentley a un train de retard sur la concurrence. Cela n\u2019emp\u00eache pas la client\u00e8le de d\u00e9bourser 182’500 euros (hors options) pour cette Flying Spur W12 S, car son attrait demeure bien ailleurs : prestige, raffinement, personnalisation sans limite, sans oublier la pi\u00e8ce ma\u00eetresse : un moteur W12 bi-turbo de 6.0L d\u00e9veloppant 635 ch et 820 Nm de couple. Une v\u00e9ritable esp\u00e8ce en voie de disparition \u00e0 l\u2019heure o\u00f9 tout le monde parle d\u2019hybridation.<\/p>\n

Son poids \u00e9lev\u00e9 et ses pneus tr\u00e8s larges \u2013 275 mm aux 4 coins \u2013 incitent \u00e0 la prudence notamment sur les portions en d\u00e9vers. Dans le cr\u00e9puscule d\u2019un hiver qui bat son plein, la descente s\u2019effectue au pas, mais le quatuor retranscrit par la sonorisation Hi-Fi Naim \u00e0 13 canaux (6’130 euros) permet d\u2019\u00e9voluer en toute s\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\nDe retour au sec, demain est un autre jour et c\u2019est Ang\u00e9lique qui m\u2019accompagne pour go\u00fbter \u00e0 tout le raffinement qu\u2019offre la Bentley Flying Spur. Tous les r\u00e9glages sont \u00e9lectriques, des appuis-t\u00eate au r\u00e9glage de hauteur de ceinture en passant par l\u2019allongement de l\u2019assise. Les si\u00e8ges s\u2019avancent et s\u2019inclinent \u00e9galement \u00e0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re, et comportent eux aussi les fonctions massages, chauffage et ventilation, lorsque les rideaux pare-soleil automatiques ne suffisent pas. De quoi se sentir \u00e0 l\u2019aise et bien choy\u00e9, m\u00eame si par rapport \u00e0 la Mulsanne<\/a>, la garde au toit inf\u00e9rieur peut occasionner un sentiment de confinement. Le meilleur se situe sans doute entre les deux si\u00e8ges arri\u00e8re, mais gardons cela pour la fin\u00a0: on ne boit pas en conduisant\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Pour profiter au maximum de son inertie une fois lanc\u00e9e, il faudra donc placer soi-m\u00eame le levier en position neutre, ce qui vu l\u2019app\u00e9tit du W12 de 6.0L, peut faire gagner plusieurs l\/100km. Bien s\u00fbr, cela n\u2019est valable que sur les l\u00e9g\u00e8res descentes, durant lesquelles le frein moteur induit par le rapport engag\u00e9 ralentit l\u2019auto et oblige \u00e0 solliciter r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement les gaz au lieu de filer sur son \u00e9lan en mode d\u00e9bray\u00e9 (aussi appel\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0coasting\u00a0\u00bb pour les transmissions faisant elles-m\u00eames cette man\u0153uvre, comme la PDK de Porsche ou la DSG de Volkswagen).<\/p>\n

Freinage consistant faisant g\u00e9n\u00e9reusement plonger l\u2019avant, avant de se cabrer brutalement en arri\u00e8re lors de la relance, et c\u2019est reparti pour une douce symphonie orchestr\u00e9e par ses 12 cylindres ! Douce, comme sa transmission Quickshift \u00e0 8 rapports qui n\u2019a de rapidit\u00e9 que le nom. Laisser de c\u00f4t\u00e9 le mode Sport automatique au profit du mode manuel\u00a0? Pas vraiment opportun, vu qu\u2019il s\u2019\u00e9coule pr\u00e8s d\u2019une seconde avant que l\u2019action sur les palettes ne soit ordonn\u00e9e \u00e0 la transmission… Ajoutez \u00e0 cela un \u00ab\u00a0overrun \u00bb moteur important au rel\u00e2ch\u00e9 des gaz, et vous conclurez que conduire rapidement un tel engin de 2.5 tonnes requiert \u00e0 la fois motivation et anticipation.<\/p>\n
