\nLors de l\u2019essai des VW Golf R et GTI TCR \u00e0 l\u2019Anneau du Rhin<\/a> en septembre dernier, une Golf GTI de premi\u00e8re g\u00e9n\u00e9ration \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sente pour nous rappeler la gen\u00e8se des mod\u00e8les sportifs chez Volkswagen. J\u2019avais compar\u00e9 son gabarit \u00e0 la VW Up!, sans savoir que quelques mois plus tard je serai l\u2019un des premiers \u00e0 prendre le volant d\u2019une Up! GTI. D\u00e9part donc pour Nice pour d\u00e9couvrir cette nouveaut\u00e9 p\u00e9tillante. Un peu de soleil ne va pas me faire de mal en cette fin janvier.<\/p>\n

\nVolkswagen s’est install\u00e9e sur un parc voisin de l’a\u00e9roport. Arriv\u00e9 sur place je d\u00e9couvre, align\u00e9es au cordeau, une vingtaine de VW Up! GTI. Quelques d\u00e9tails me rappellent imm\u00e9diatement la premi\u00e8re Golf GTI : Les bandes lat\u00e9rales qui ornent les bas de caisse, le liser\u00e9 de calandre rouge et ses r\u00e9troviseurs noirs. Mais il est bien loin le temps des pare-chocs m\u00e9talliques et des jantes acier en 13 pouces. On trouve maintenant des boucliers sp\u00e9cifiques \u00e0 cette version sport et des jantes aluminium de 17 pouces qui occupent les quatre coins de la bombinette.<\/p>\n

Niveau coloris, plus de choix que pour la GTI de 1976. En plus du rouge et du gris propos\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, on peut configurer actuellement la Up! GTI en noir ou en blanc, avec pour chaque teinte la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019avoir le toit noir.<\/p>\n

A l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, on se rend bien compte des 40 ans qui s\u00e9parent les deux mod\u00e8les. La planche de bord prend de la couleur sous la forme d\u2019un plaquage \u00ab Pixel-Red \u00bb, qui m\u2019a fait penser aux DS3. La climatisation qui \u00e9tait assur\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque par l\u2019ouverture des fen\u00eatres fait partie de la dotation de base et peut m\u00eame \u00eatre automatique en option. Le radiocassette a laiss\u00e9 place \u00e0 un syst\u00e8me permettant de connecter son smartphone avec une application VW d\u00e9di\u00e9e, et de le commander via les boutons du tableau de bord. Un support avec une prise USB est pr\u00e9sent en option pour utiliser son smartphone comme GPS. Cela ne m’a pas pleinement convaincu, et un grand \u00e9cran tactile serait nettement plus simple d’utilisation, et plus agr\u00e9able \u00e0 l’usage, mais forc\u00e9ment plus cher.<\/p>\n

\nLe volant garni de cuir est muni des diverses commandes habituelles, mais n’est malheureusement pas r\u00e9glable en profondeur. Pour pousser le c\u00f4t\u00e9 r\u00e9tro, un pommeau en forme de balle de Golf aurait avantageusement remplac\u00e9 le mod\u00e8le plut\u00f4t banal qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 choisi, m\u00eame si celui-ci annonce six rapports, soit deux de plus que son ain\u00e9e. Les si\u00e8ges chauffants sont de s\u00e9rie et ces derniers retrouvent le motif \u00e9cossais et le maintien anecdotique de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Mais il n’est pas possible de les descendre beaucoup et les grands gabarits risquent de se retrouver proches du plafond. Mais \u00e9tonnamment, je n\u2019ai pas la sensation d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9troit. Les passagers avant n’auront pas besoin de rentrer les coudes. Les places arri\u00e8re suffiront \u00e0 des enfants ou pour d\u00e9panner sur de courts trajets. Quant au coffre, il propose un volume de 251 litres, soit 32 litres de plus que la Renault Twingo GT<\/a>\u00a0essay\u00e9e l’\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier.<\/p>\n

Prenons maintenant la route pour voir ce que vaut cette mini GTI. Autant vous le dire tout de suite, je n’ai pas attrap\u00e9 la chair de poule en entendant les premiers miaulements du 3 cylindres. Le trajet en bord de mer m’emmenant de l’a\u00e9roport de Nice jusqu’\u00e0 la Rascasse de Monaco m’a par contre permis d’appr\u00e9cier l’agr\u00e9ment de ce 1.0L turbo. Malgr\u00e9 sa faible cylindr\u00e9e, il se montre \u00e9tonnamment vivant. Les 200 Nm de couple pr\u00e9sents de 2’000 \u00e0 3’500 trs\/min permettent de s’extirper de la circulation avec facilit\u00e9. Le trajet ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 \u00e0 une moyenne de 26 km\/h, pas encore d’information \u00e0 vous donner quant \u00e0 sa tenue de route !<\/p>\n

Entre deux douceurs, j’ai pu analyser le moteur ainsi que le syst\u00e8me d’\u00e9chappement qui nous \u00e9taient pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s. La compacit\u00e9 du moulin saute aux yeux. Pour gagner de la place, l’intercooler a \u00e9t\u00e9 log\u00e9 dans le collecteur d’admission et le collecteur d\u2019\u00e9chappement int\u00e9gr\u00e9 \u00e0 la culasse. Quant \u00e0 la suite de l’\u00e9chappement, il comporte, en plus du catalyseur, un filtre \u00e0 particule. Ce dispositif n’est pas encore r\u00e9pandu sur les moteurs \u00e0 essence, mais n\u00e9cessaire pour r\u00e9pondre aux normes Euro6 AG.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s un dernier expresso, d\u00e9part pour de petites routes sympas de la r\u00e9gion mon\u00e9gasque. Pour essayer une GTI, un aller-retour par la promenade des Anglais n’est pas id\u00e9al. C’est donc un itin\u00e9raire bis, rep\u00e9r\u00e9 sur Google Maps, qui va nous ramener \u00e0 Nice. Et c’est \u00e9galement cette application qui va nous guider, plus pr\u00e9cise que la navigation propos\u00e9e par l’application VW, qui \u00e9tait parfois en retard dans ses indications. Direction La Turbie pour voir si les promesses de sportivit\u00e9 prodigu\u00e9es par VW sont tenues !<\/p>\n

Ici, pas de mode de conduite \u00e0 s\u00e9lectionner : il n’y en a pas, ou plut\u00f4t est-il g\u00e9r\u00e9 par le pied droit. Plus emb\u00eatant, l\u2019ESP n\u2019est pas d\u00e9sactivable. Aux premi\u00e8res franches acc\u00e9l\u00e9rations, le son du moteur se fait rauque. Bien qu\u2019artificiel, il n\u2019est pas d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able. Les mont\u00e9es en r\u00e9gimes se font sans peine jusqu\u2019\u00e0 5’000 trs\/min, r\u00e9gime de la puissance maximum, et permettent de se faire plaisir sur ce parcours assez sinueux. On retrouve les sensations d\u2019autrefois, o\u00f9 l\u2019on pouvait rester gaz \u00e0 fond plus de 10 secondes sans risquer la prison. Il faut par contre compter sur le temps de r\u00e9ponse du turbo.<\/p>\n

Niveau ch\u00e2ssis, les ing\u00e9nieurs de Wolfsburg ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 trouver le compromis entre confort et sportivit\u00e9. La prise de roulis est tr\u00e8s faible et le grip procur\u00e9 par les Goodyear en 195\/40R17 excellent. L\u2019ensemble permet de se faire plaisir d\u00e8s que la route se d\u00e9gage et se fait sinueuse. Le maniement de la bo\u00eete \u00e0 vitesse n\u2019est par contre pas aussi agr\u00e9able que sur la Honda Civic 1.5 Sport<\/a>. Concernant le freinage, les quelques descentes effectu\u00e9es \u00e0 rythme soutenu ont fait ressortir la bonne endurance du syst\u00e8me, ce certainement gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la peinture rouge des \u00e9triers avant\u2026 L\u2019arri\u00e8re se contente par contre de freins \u00e0 tambours, ce qui n\u2019est pas un handicap au vu des 995 kg que revendique la VW Up! GTI sur la balance.<\/p>\n

La Renault Twingo GT (d\u00e8s CHF 19’990.-) lui conc\u00e8de 5 ch et 30 Nm, mais surtout pr\u00e8s de 100 kg sur la balance. Quant \u00e0 l\u2019Abarth 595, mieux motoris\u00e9e avec son 4 cylindres 1.4L de 145 ch, il faudra d\u00e9bourser au minimum CHF 23’700.-.<\/strong>
Bien emmen\u00e9e sur des parcours d\u00e9pourvus de longues lignes droites, la VW Up! GTI pourrait bien vexer quelques propri\u00e9taires de plus grosses cylindr\u00e9es !<\/strong><\/p>\n
