\nVainqueur \u00e0 cinq reprises des 24 Heures du Mans, Bentley met judicieusement en avant son patrimoine sportif pour se d\u00e9marquer de Rolls-Royce dans le segment du grand luxe. Bien que la Bentley Mulsanne EWB ne soit pas la plus sportive de la marque, je l\u2019ai confi\u00e9e au pilote genevois Harold Primat. Huiti\u00e8me des 24 Heures du N\u00fcrburgring de 2015 au volant d\u2019une Continental GT3, il a fait ressortir quelques-uns des liens qui unissent la Mulsanne \u00e0 sa Bentley de course.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bentley Arnage, Bentley Hunaudi\u00e8res, Bentley Mulsanne, ce sont tout autant de mod\u00e8les qui rendent hommage \u00e0 quelques-uns des tron\u00e7ons les plus embl\u00e9matiques du circuit des 24 Heures du Mans que la marque anglaise a remport\u00e9es \u00e0 quatre reprises cons\u00e9cutives, de 1927 \u00e0 1930, puis une cinqui\u00e8me fois en 2003. Le sport automobile fait ainsi partie int\u00e9grante de l\u2019ADN de la marque et la Bentley Continental GT3, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e en 2013, a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 plus de 500 courses depuis.<\/p>\n

\u00abCet engagement en comp\u00e9tition n\u2019a pas seulement d\u00e9montr\u00e9 notre comp\u00e9titivit\u00e9, il a \u00e9galement permis de d\u00e9poussi\u00e9rer l\u2019image de Bentley.\u00bb Ces propos de Wolfgang D\u00fcrheimer, le pr\u00e9sident de Bentley qui avait dirig\u00e9 de 2001 \u00e0 2011 le d\u00e9partement recherche et d\u00e9veloppement de Porsche, rappellent, si besoin est, les avantages qu\u2019un constructeur peut retirer du sport automobile. Sans ce dernier, Bentley ne serait pas ce qu\u2019il est aujourd\u2019hui et il en va de m\u00eame pour Audi dont certains des moteurs les plus puissants se retrouvent sous les capots de Bentley, ces deux marques faisant partie toutes les deux du groupe Volkswagen.<\/p>\n

\nConfortablement install\u00e9 au volant de la Bentley Mulsanne EWB, Harold Primat se retrouve dans un environnement familier : \u00abJe ressens cette m\u00eame sensation d\u2019espace qui m\u2019avait impressionn\u00e9 dans la Continental GT3. Je sortais alors de deux saisons disput\u00e9es au volant d\u2019une Audi R8 et d\u2019une Mercedes SLS et leur habitacle \u00e9tait nettement moins large\u00bb, pr\u00e9cise-t-il. \u00abOn se sent imm\u00e9diatement \u00e0 l\u2019aise. La largeur du v\u00e9hicule peut certes \u00eatre p\u00e9nalisante dans les chicanes, elle contribue n\u00e9anmoins \u00e0 une stabilit\u00e9 parfaite dans les courbes n\u00e9goci\u00e9es \u00e0 grande vitesse.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Pendant son essai sur des routes de campagne, il n\u2019est toutefois gu\u00e8re question de rouler \u00e0 grande vitesse mais plut\u00f4t d\u2019analyser la qualit\u00e9 du travail des ing\u00e9nieurs de Bentley qui ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 allier le c\u00f4t\u00e9 statutaire et luxueux d\u2019un paquebot de pr\u00e8s de 3 tonnes et six m\u00e8tres de long avec un comportement dynamique et des acc\u00e9l\u00e9rations susceptibles de rivaliser avec bon nombre de GTI.<\/p>\n

\u00abJe me souviens tr\u00e8s bien des propos que m\u2019avaient tenus en 2015 les responsables de Bentley. Ils m\u2019avaient en effet expliqu\u00e9 que leur engagement en comp\u00e9tition avait pour but de rajeunir la client\u00e8le de la marque en lui proposant des voitures qui soient aussi luxueuses que dynamiques. Le moins que l\u2019on puisse dire, c\u2019est qu\u2019ils y sont parfaitement parvenus\u00bb, rel\u00e8ve Harold Primat qui s\u2019installe maintenant \u00e0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re de la Mulsanne afin de go\u00fbter pleinement \u00e0 tout son raffinement et \u00e0 l\u2019espace hors du commun procur\u00e9 par les 25 cm suppl\u00e9mentaires de cette version EWB \u00e0 empattement long.<\/p>\n

Un dernier clin d\u2019\u0153il au sport automobile se retrouve sur les deux p\u00e9dales. Elles semblent ajour\u00e9es comme celles d\u2019une voiture de course. Mais \u00e0 y regarder de plus pr\u00e8s, les points noirs qui les distinguent sont des \u00e9l\u00e9ments de caoutchouc ! Le mode de conduite sport, un des quatre disponibles avec les modes Confort, Bentley et Individual, n\u2019est lui aussi pas v\u00e9ritablement sportif. Il nous a cependant permis d\u2019avaler \u00e0 tr\u00e8s vive allure et sans trop de roulis les courbes de la mont\u00e9e de l\u2019autoroute qui relie Vevey \u00e0 Ch\u00e2tel-St-Denis. Impressionnant !<\/p>\n

L\u2019indicateur de consommation indiquait alors une valeur de 40 l\/100km, elle aussi impressionnante ! Mais quand on aime, on ne compte pas. Cela vaut \u00e9galement pour le prix de notre Mulsanne EWB d\u2019essai. Son tarif de base de 295’400 euros est lest\u00e9 de 70’595 euros d\u2019options (d\u00e9taill\u00e9es dans la fiche technique ci-apr\u00e8s) pour une facture totale de 365’995 euros, soit CHF 423’822 au cours du jour.<\/p>\n
