Essayer une Bentley Continental, c\u2019est essayer l\u2019une des plus grandes r\u00e9ussites de l\u2019ing\u00e9nieur Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch. Le p\u00e8re de la Porsche 917, de l\u2019Audi Quattro et de la Bugatti Chiron a en effet r\u00e9alis\u00e9 un coup de ma\u00eetre lorsque, \u00e0 la t\u00eate du groupe Volkswagen, il d\u00e9cida en 1998 de racheter la marque Bentley pour en faire un mod\u00e8le de raffinement britannique et de sportivit\u00e9. Ces deux caract\u00e9ristiques ressortent parfaitement dans la Bentley Continental GTC V8 S de notre essai.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Comment conf\u00e9rer, il y a une vingtaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, au groupe Volkswagen en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral et aux imposantes Audi A8 en particulier, une image de marque qui soit encore plus haut de gamme que celles de BMW et de Mercedes ? Tout simplement en achetant coup sur coup des marques aussi prestigieuses que Bentley, Bugatti et Lamborghini. Tel a \u00e9t\u00e9 le coup de g\u00e9nie de Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch, alors grand patron de Volkswagen, qui a rapidement compris tout le b\u00e9n\u00e9fice qu\u2019il pouvait retirer en transf\u00e9rant les meilleurs moteurs Audi chez des marques aussi prestigieuses que Bentley et Lamborghini. A commencer par un meilleur amortissement des \u00e9normes investissements que n\u00e9cessite le d\u00e9veloppement de nouveaux moteurs. \u00ab Cela nous permet de gagner beaucoup d\u2019argent m\u00eame si les chiffres de production sont relativement faibles. \u00bb, \u00e9crivait Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch dans son autobiographie publi\u00e9e en 2002.<\/p>\n

Le moteur 4.0 litres V8 biturbo de 528 ch, qui \u00e9quipe la Bentley Continental GTC V8 S de notre essai, se retrouve ainsi non seulement dans les Audi RS6, RS7 et autres S8, mais \u00e9galement dans le Lamborghini Urus, le nouveau SUV de la marque au taureau, dont la sortie est imminente. Le succ\u00e8s de cette strat\u00e9gie s\u2019explique par le fait que le groupe Volkswagen a tr\u00e8s bien su valoriser les atouts originels de chacune des nouvelles marques qu\u2019il a achet\u00e9es. L\u2019image sportive de Bentley, vainqueur \u00e0 quatre reprises cons\u00e9cutives des 24 Heures du Mans de 1927 \u00e0 1930, ne demandait qu\u2019\u00e0 \u00eatre d\u00e9poussi\u00e9r\u00e9e. Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch a alors permis \u00e0 Bentley de remporter \u00e0 nouveau les 24 Heures du Mans, en 2003, avec un prototype dont le moteur 4.0 litres V8 bi-turbo \u00e9tait \u00e9troitement d\u00e9riv\u00e9 de celui des Audi R8 qui s\u2019\u00e9taient impos\u00e9es les trois ann\u00e9es pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes. Aujourd\u2019hui encore, les Bentley Continental brillent en course aussi bien en Europe qu\u2019en Chine. Et dans ce dernier pays, c\u2019est le Suisse Alexandre Imperatori, vu en 2016 aux 24 Heures du Mans avec l\u2019\u00e9curie vaudoise Rebellion, qui d\u00e9fend les couleurs du Bentley Team Absolute.<\/p>\n

Cette image sportive l\u00e9gitime l\u2019essai de la Bentley Continental GTC V8 S dans Sport-Auto.ch. Le cabriolet que le constructeur britannique a mis \u00e0 notre disposition a beau peser 2,5 tonnes, son moteur de 528 ch lui permet de laisser sur place un grand nombre de voitures plus sportives. Bentley rel\u00e8ve ainsi qu\u2019il ne lui faut que 4,7 secondes pour passer de 0 \u00e0 100 km\/h et que sa vitesse de pointe s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00e0 308 km\/h. Il s\u2019agit de performances d\u2019excellent niveau et notre version V8 S n\u2019a pas \u00e0 rougir de la comparaison avec la Continental GT Speed Black Edition<\/a> essay\u00e9e au mois d\u2019avril. Avec son W12 de 642 ch, la GT Speed revendique 4,3 secondes de 0 \u00e0 100 km\/h et 328 km\/h de vitesse de pointe ; un \u00e9cart semblant presque n\u00e9gligeable sur route ouverte.<\/p>\n

En respectant scrupuleusement les limitations sur autoroute et sur des routes cantonales en campagne, nous n\u2019avons consomm\u00e9 que 9,7 l\/100km. Et si nous avons enregistr\u00e9 une consommation maximale de 15,8 l\/100km apr\u00e8s avoir affront\u00e9 sportivement le col du Jaun et diff\u00e9rentes routes de montagne du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de Crans-Montana, du Val d\u2019H\u00e9rens et du Val d\u2019Anniviers, la consommation moyenne affich\u00e9e apr\u00e8s notre essai de 1\u2019402 km s\u2019est \u00e9lev\u00e9e \u00e0 13,7 l\/100km, un r\u00e9sultat \u00ab honn\u00eate \u00bb au vue des prestations et du poids de la b\u00eate. Cela s\u2019explique par le syst\u00e8me COD (cylinder on demand). Lorsque l\u2019exploitation de la puissance est mod\u00e9r\u00e9e (par exemple \u00e0 vitesse constante sur autoroute), la commande du moteur d\u00e9sactive en toute discr\u00e9tion quatre des huit cylindres et contribue ainsi \u00e0 r\u00e9duire la consommation. Mais s\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019effectuer un d\u00e9passement ou d\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer \u00e0 fond en entrant sur autoroute, les huit cylindres se remettent instantan\u00e9ment au travail afin de fournir toute la puissance. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son couple de 680Nm disponible d\u00e8s 1\u2019700 trs\/min, la Bentley GTC V8 S nous a offert des reprises fulgurantes, plus toniques que celles de la Porsche Panamera Turbo<\/a> dont le couple maximum de 770 Nm n\u2019arrive qu\u2019\u00e0 partir de 1\u2019960 trs\/min.<\/p>\n

La S se distingue en outre par une grille de calandre noir brillant, le sigle \u00ab B \u00bb de Bentley en \u00e9mail rouge et une grille de pare-chocs avant en trois \u00e9l\u00e9ments \u00e0 finition noire. A l\u2019arri\u00e8re, les sorties d\u2019\u00e9chappement chrom\u00e9es forment un huit et la sportivit\u00e9 de l\u2019ensemble est soulign\u00e9e par une bo\u00eete automatique ZF \u00e0 8 rapports courts. Si la position des palettes de changement de vitesses est beaucoup trop haute et pr\u00eate le flanc \u00e0 la critique, le tableau de bord recouvert de cuir et de carbone est de toute beaut\u00e9. Il en va de m\u00eame pour les commandes en aluminium et pour les si\u00e8ges capitonn\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Il est vrai que notre Continental \u00e9tait \u00e9quip\u00e9e de freins en carbone, une option \u00e0 11’900 euros, soit CHF 13’189.-. Finalement, le principal d\u00e9faut de Bentley r\u00e9side dans sa politique des options. Pour une voiture dont le prix de base s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00e0 174’700 euros (CHF 192’170.-), il n\u2019est pas normal, \u00e0 notre avis, de devoir encore d\u00e9bourser plus de CHF 2’000.- pour un r\u00e9gulateur de vitesse adaptatif. Notre voiture d\u2019essai a vu ainsi son prix de base \u00eatre augment\u00e9 de plus de CHF 45’000.- d\u2019options. La phrase de Ferdinand Pi\u00ebch, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 cit\u00e9e au d\u00e9but de cet article et qui relevait que le groupe Volkswagen peut \u00ab gagner beaucoup d\u2019argent m\u00eame si les chiffres de production sont relativement faibles \u00bb, trouve ici toute sa signification !<\/p>\n

Cela avec succ\u00e8s car Bentley a vendu l\u2019an pass\u00e9 le nombre record de 2\u2019676 voitures en Europe, soit 56% de plus qu\u2019en 2015, gr\u00e2ce notamment \u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e du premier SUV de son histoire, le Bentley Bentayga, qui fait d\u00e9j\u00e0 un tabac\u00a0! <\/strong><\/p>\n
