Mutation. C\u2019est le premier mot qui m\u2019est venu \u00e0 l\u2019esprit lorsque j\u2019ai d\u00e9couvert le Renault Espace de 6\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Avec cette nouvelle mouture, la marque au losange a abandonn\u00e9 l\u2019architecture mono-volume au profit d\u2019une silhouette bien plus \u00e0 la mode : celle d\u2019un SUV muni de grandes jantes, qui plus est dans cette version Esprit Alpine. Alors, les mots \u00ab\u00a0Alpine\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Espace\u00a0\u00bb peuvent-ils cohabiter dans un SUV, ou s\u2019agirait-il d\u2019une, voire de deux usurpations d\u2019identit\u00e9\u00a0? L\u2019Espace de 6\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 un Austral<\/a> allong\u00e9 de 21 cm (+ 7 cm sur l\u2019empattement), ce qui lui permet d\u2019accueillir une 3\u00e8me rang\u00e9e de si\u00e8ges. De profil, ses 4,72 m\u00e8tres et son hayon vertical lui conf\u00e8rent une allure de break sur\u00e9lev\u00e9, avec une petite batterie de 2\u00a0kWh dans son sous-bassement. Notons qu\u2019il ne s\u2019agit pas d\u2019une voiture hybride rechargeable, mais d\u2019une \u00ab\u00a0full hybrid\u00a0\u00bb en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au fait que sa batterie est recharg\u00e9e uniquement par le moteur thermique (nous y reviendrons).<\/p>\n

Cette version Esprit Alpine re\u00e7oit des logos Alpine sur ses ailes ainsi que des jantes de 20 pouces Daytona avec des pneus de 235 mm, contre 205 mm sur les jantes 19 pouces de s\u00e9rie. Pour parfaire cette tenue de sport, la peinture gris schiste mat (CHF 1\u2019400.-) qui est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 plut\u00f4t satin\u00e9e, \u00e9quipe notre mod\u00e8le d\u2019essai. Comme sur l\u2019Austral, \u00ab Esprit Alpine \u00bb d\u00e9signe une esth\u00e9tique retravaill\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur et \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, et non une quelconque \u00e9volution technique. Cette appellation est-elle trop os\u00e9e ? Chacun jugera ; nul doute que le but est de doper les ventes en amenant un c\u00f4t\u00e9 exclusif qui s\u00e9duira une partie de la client\u00e8le, \u00e0 l\u2019instar de ce que font depuis des ann\u00e9es certains autres constructeurs.<\/p>\n

L\u2019int\u00e9rieur b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie d\u2019une pr\u00e9sentation moderne et \u00e9pur\u00e9e, et les mat\u00e9riaux employ\u00e9s sont globalement valorisants. A l\u2019avant, la garde au toit et la position de conduite sont excellentes, m\u00eame pour les grands gabarits. La bo\u00eete \u00e0 gants, s\u2019ouvrant par le haut, est tr\u00e8s pratique, comme le rangement de la console m\u00e9diane dont le couvercle est coulissant et qui permet de recharger facilement son t\u00e9l\u00e9phone. Du coup, la s\u00e9lection du mode de marche (D-N-R) s\u2019op\u00e8re par un commodo situ\u00e9 \u00e0 droite du volant, ce qui pourrait ne pas convenir \u00e0 tout le monde.<\/p>\n

Lorsque la banquette est recul\u00e9e au maximum, la place est abondante. Mais dans cette configuration, le volume du coffre n\u2019est que de 477 litres, limit\u00e9 par un seuil de chargement haut. Le volume grimpe n\u00e9anmoins \u00e0 677 litres lorsque la banquette est avanc\u00e9e au maximum (\u2026aucun adulte ne pourra d\u00e8s lors s\u2019y tenir) et \u00e0 1\u2019714 litres lorsqu\u2019elle est rabattue.<\/p>\n

Et qu\u2019en est-il \u00e0 la troisi\u00e8me rang\u00e9e ? Dissimul\u00e9s dans le coffre, les deux si\u00e8ges sont escamotables ind\u00e9pendamment. Il faudra avancer la banquette en position interm\u00e9diaire pour qu\u2019un adulte de petite taille puisse s\u2019y tenir, et l\u2019acc\u00e8s n\u2019y est pas ais\u00e9 du fait de la garde au toit limit\u00e9e. L\u2019Espace 5 offrait davantage de volume de par sa garde au sol inf\u00e9rieure, ainsi qu\u2019une plus grande surface vitr\u00e9e, mais mesurait 14 cm de plus \u2013 il est si rare qu\u2019un nouveau mod\u00e8le soit moins grand que celui qu\u2019il remplace, cela m\u00e9rite d\u2019\u00eatre relev\u00e9. La pr\u00e9sence du toit panoramique (CHF 1’200.-) diminue n\u00e9anmoins la sensation de confinement. Dans cette configuration, le coffre ne propose que 159 litres. A noter qu\u2019il est possible de ne pas opter pour cette troisi\u00e8me rang\u00e9e de si\u00e8ges, ce qui permet de gagner une centaine de litres dans le coffre et plusieurs dizaines de kilos.<\/p>\n

La plupart des fonctions se g\u00e8rent via une dalle tactile verticale \u00e0 la fois lisible et rapide, mais Renault a eu la bonne id\u00e9e de conserver des boutons physiques pour la climatisation ainsi que certaines fonctions cl\u00e9s, comme l\u2019ESP ou l\u2019assistant de maintien sur la voie, qui a l\u2019avantage de ne pas se remettre en fonction au d\u00e9marrage. Le conducteur b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie de quatre modes de conduite configurables s\u00e9lectionnables avec le bouton MultiSense sur le volant.<\/p>\n

Le groupe motopropulseur distribuant 200 ch sur les seules roues avant est compos\u00e9 d\u2019un moteur 3\u00a0cylindres turbo 1.2L de 130 ch, d\u2019un moteur \u00e9lectrique de 68 ch et d\u2019un alterno-d\u00e9marreur. Cet ensemble permet \u00e0 l\u2019Espace d\u2019atteindre 100 km\/h en 8,8 secondes, et 174 km\/h en vitesse de pointe, par le biais de deux bo\u00eetes de vitesses (deux rapports pour le moteur \u00e9lectrique et quatre rapports pour le moteur thermique).<\/p>\n

Au volant, le travail du ch\u00e2ssis 4Control \u00e0 quatre roues directrices est vite perceptible. On peut d\u2019ailleurs modifier l\u2019effet du dispositif, celui-ci \u00e9tant r\u00e9glable sur 13 niveaux. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce syst\u00e8me, le diam\u00e8tre de braquage passe de 11,6 \u00e0 10,4 m\u00e8tres, soit un gain de 60 cm sur le rayon de braquage\u00a0; tr\u00e8s pratique pour les man\u0153uvres de stationnement\u00a0! L\u2019Espace fait ainsi mieux que certaines citadines, au point de penser que la fonction \u00ab\u00a0parking mains libres\u00a0\u00bb (CHF 850.-) est inutile, m\u00eame pour les conducteurs les moins dou\u00e9s. Attention n\u00e9anmoins\u00a0; en supprimant le pack parking 360, la cam\u00e9ra 360, qui reste une pr\u00e9cieuse alli\u00e9e, ne serait plus de la partie\u00a0!<\/p>\n

En utilisation normale, l\u2019Espace s\u2019av\u00e8re assez doux, m\u00eame si on ressent un soubresaut lorsque le moteur thermique s\u2019enclenche, ainsi que de l\u00e9g\u00e8res vibrations dans le volant en fonction de son r\u00e9gime. La recharge quasi continue de la batterie lorsque le moteur essence est utilis\u00e9 permet de rouler entre 30 et 50% de la distance parcourue en mode EV (\u00e9lectrique), et cela m\u00eame sur l’autoroute. Du coup, la consommation demeure int\u00e9ressante pour un v\u00e9hicule de ce gabarit\u00a0: \u00e0 peine 6 l\/100km sur un parcours mixte\u00a0(contre 5 l\/100km annonc\u00e9s pour le cycle WLTP). C\u2019est en p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie urbaine (m\u00e9lange de portions \u00e0 30, 50 et 70 km\/h avec des carrefours) que l\u2019Espace se montre le plus \u00e9conome, avec moins de 5 l\/100 km\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Quant \u00e0 la sonorit\u00e9 tr\u00e8s discr\u00e8te, elle ne permet pas de savoir \u00e0 quel r\u00e9gime la m\u00e9canique se situe, et il n\u2019y a pas de compte-tours\u2026 Le Renault Espace se conduit donc davantage comme une voiture \u00e9lectrique ; \u00e0 pleine charge, le couple fourni par le moteur \u00e9lectrique lisse les changements de rapports. Un d\u00e9passement se profile ? Ecrasez la p\u00e9dale de l\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rateur sans vous poser de questions, et la voiture s\u2019occupe du reste avec une relative tonicit\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Si sa m\u00e9canique ne procure aucune \u00e9motion, le syst\u00e8me 4Control s\u2019av\u00e8re aussi salutaire en conduite dynamique qu\u2019en ville. Alliant stabilit\u00e9 dans les portions rapides et agilit\u00e9 dans les virages serr\u00e9s, il incite \u00e0 augmenter le rythme et rend la conduite amusante. Ce d\u2019autant plus qu\u2019avec \u00ab\u00a0seulement\u00a0\u00bb 1’749 kg \u00e0 vide en configuration 7 places avec roue de secours (CHF 250.-), l\u2019Espace ne souffre pas d\u2019un embonpoint particulier. Du coup, les mouvements de caisse sont assez bien ma\u00eetris\u00e9s sans que cela ne nuise au confort, contrairement \u00e0 ce que l\u2019on observe sur certains mod\u00e8les plus lourds disposant de grosses barres antiroulis. Le freinage r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9ratif automatique est r\u00e9glable sur quatre niveaux avec les palettes du volant, qui permettent de passer d\u2019un mode quasi roues libres \u00e0 un freinage r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9ratif assez prononc\u00e9. Tout cela est compl\u00e9t\u00e9 par un petit volant qui tient bien en main reli\u00e9 \u00e0 une direction dont l\u2019effort est r\u00e9glable sur trois niveaux.<\/p>\n
