\nApr\u00e8s avoir vendu 1’654 voitures en 2015, McLaren aspire \u00e0 en commercialiser plus de 3’000 d\u00e8s cette ann\u00e9e. Cela gr\u00e2ce notamment \u00e0 un mod\u00e8le plus accessible, la 540C, que Sport-Auto.ch a eu le privil\u00e8ge d\u2019essayer cet automne. Factur\u00e9e \u00e0 partir de CHF 177’740.-, elle s\u2019av\u00e8re en effet moins on\u00e9reuse que la 570GT\u00a0<\/a>dont les prix d\u00e9butent \u00e0 CHF 212’580.-.<\/p>\n

McLaren, pionnier du ch\u00e2ssis en carbone en F1, construit depuis un peu plus de vingt ans des voitures de s\u00e9rie \u00e9quip\u00e9es elles aussi d\u2019un ch\u00e2ssis en carbone. Cela vaut \u00e9galement pour son nouveau mod\u00e8le d\u2019entr\u00e9e de gamme, le coup\u00e9 \u00e0 moteur central 540C, que le constructeur britannique a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 cet automne \u00e0 un cercle tr\u00e8s restreint de m\u00e9dias, dont Sport-Auto.ch.<\/p>\n

L\u00e9g\u00e8rement moins puissante que la 570GT que j\u2019avais essay\u00e9e \u00e0 T\u00e9n\u00e9riffe ce printemps<\/a>, la 540C dispose d\u2019un moteur V8 biturbo d\u00e9veloppant 540 ch. Chez McLaren, la d\u00e9nomination du mod\u00e8le correspond en effet \u00e0 la puissance en chevaux. La bonne nouvelle est que cette diff\u00e9rence de 30 ch ne m\u2019a jamais frapp\u00e9 pendant le parcours d\u2019essais d\u2019un peu plus de quatre heures que McLaren avait concoct\u00e9 de Zurich \u00e0 Donaueschingen (Allemagne) en passant par de magnifiques routes dans la For\u00eat-Noire, puis de Donaueschingen \u00e0 Zurich sur un parcours comprenant un tron\u00e7on d\u2019autoroute \u00e0 vitesse illimit\u00e9e au nord de Singen.<\/p>\n

Une fois install\u00e9 \u00e0 bord, je trouve facilement une position de conduite id\u00e9ale. La console centrale dispose d\u2019un grand \u00e9cran tactile de 7 pouces \u00e0 partir duquel on peut modifier tous les \u00e9l\u00e9ments du syst\u00e8me d\u2019info-divertissement. Les commandes de l\u2019air conditionn\u00e9 y sont \u00e9galement int\u00e9gr\u00e9es, ce qui permet de r\u00e9duire au minimum le nombre d\u2019interrupteurs.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est sous cet \u00e9cran tactile que se trouvent les trois touches D, N et R de la bo\u00eete de vitesses. Juste un peu plus haut, se trouve le bouton \u00ab\u00a0ACTIVE\u00a0\u00bb qui permet d\u2019actionner deux commutateurs, un pour les amortisseurs, l\u2019autre pour la gestion du moteur et de la bo\u00eete s\u00e9quentielle \u00e0 sept vitesses, qui proposent les trois modes suivants\u00a0: N, S et T pour Normal, Sport et Track.\u00a0Avec ce dernier mode, le caract\u00e8re de la 540C devient tr\u00e8s m\u00e9chant. Le V8 bi-turbo se d\u00e9cha\u00eene et ses vocalises deviennent envo\u00fbtantes.<\/p>\n

\nL\u2019affichage du compte-tour, rond jusque-l\u00e0, est d\u00e9sormais horizontal, \u00e0 l\u2019image de celui d\u2019une F1. Si les acc\u00e9l\u00e9rations deviennent explosives, la descente des rapports est tout aussi impressionnante. Les vitesses de la bo\u00eete SSG \u00e0 double embrayage d\u00e9gringolent en effet en mode rafale. Pour traverser les villages sans se faire remarquer, il suffit de passer du mode Track au mode Normal. Le V8 bi-turbo fait alors preuve d\u2019une souplesse stup\u00e9fiante.<\/p>\n

Tout comme la 570GT essay\u00e9e \u00e0 T\u00e9n\u00e9riffe<\/a>, la 540C est parfaitement utilisable en milieu urbain et par cons\u00e9quent au quotidien. A cet effet, les ing\u00e9nieurs de McLaren ont d\u00e9coup\u00e9 la cellule du ch\u00e2ssis MonoCell II en fibre de carbone de telle fa\u00e7on que l\u2019acc\u00e8s et la sortie de l\u2019habitacle soient plus faciles. La 540C a beau d\u00e9velopper 30 chevaux de moins que la 570GT, elle affiche 39 kilos de moins sur la balance, \u00e0 savoir 1\u2019311 kg au lieu de 1’350 kg. C\u2019est certainement ce qui explique que la diff\u00e9rence de puissance pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment \u00e9voqu\u00e9e ne m\u2019a jamais frapp\u00e9. Les chiffres d\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration communiqu\u00e9s par McLaren font \u00e9tat d\u2019une diff\u00e9rence d\u2019un dixi\u00e8me de seconde pour l\u2019exercice du 0 \u00e0 100 km\/h (3,5 secondes au lieu de 3,4) et de sept dixi\u00e8mes pour le 0 \u00e0 200 km\/h (10,5 secondes au lieu de 9,8), un exercice que nous avons effectu\u00e9 \u00e0 deux reprises sur l\u2019autoroute entre Donaueschingen et Singen o\u00f9 le trafic, relativement faible, nous a permis d\u2019atteindre \u00e0 trois reprises une vitesse d\u2019un peu plus de 270 km\/h au compteur. Pour atteindre, la vitesse maximale de 320 km\/h (contre 328 km\/h pour la 570GT), il aurait fallu disposer d\u2019une autoroute plus ou moins d\u00e9serte.<\/p>\n

Ceci dit, la vitesse de pointe n\u2019est pas un crit\u00e8re d\u00e9terminant de nos jours. Ce qui compte, c\u2019est son comportement sur route et c\u2019est l\u00e0 que McLaren dispose d\u2019un avantage de taille. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son ch\u00e2ssis en carbone, sa structure ultral\u00e9g\u00e8re et l\u2019utilisation de panneaux en aluminium, la 540C est nettement plus l\u00e9g\u00e8re que ses concurrentes directes. Les Porsche 911 Turbo S et Audi R8 V10, d\u2019une puissance comparable \u00e0 la 540C, affichent respectivement 1\u2019600 et 1\u2019700 kg sur la balance et paient ainsi un lourd tribut \u00e0 leur traction int\u00e9grale. Le faible poids de la 540C n\u2019est par ailleurs pas \u00e9tranger \u00e0 sa soif, tr\u00e8s mod\u00e9r\u00e9e pour une supercar. McLaren annonce une consommation mixte de 11.3 l\/100km. Il s\u2019agit l\u00e0 d\u2019une preuve suppl\u00e9mentaire que la 540C peut tr\u00e8s bien \u00eatre utilis\u00e9e au quotidien. Outre leur ch\u00e2ssis en carbone, une autre caract\u00e9ristique de toutes les McLaren de route est leurs portes en \u00e9lytre. Celles-ci ne s\u2019ouvrent pas seulement en hauteur, comme cela est le cas chez Lamborghini, mais impriment lat\u00e9ralement un l\u00e9ger arc de cercle, ce qui facilite grandement l\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 bord.<\/p>\n

\nA l\u2019heure du bilan, on peut logiquement se demander pourquoi faudrait-il acheter une McLaren 570GT \u00e0 CHF 212’580.- alors que la 540C offre des sensations de conduite similaires pour CHF 34’840.- de moins. Lorsque j\u2019ai pos\u00e9 cette question aux responsables de McLaren, ceux-ci m\u2019ont r\u00e9pondu que ces deux voitures visaient une client\u00e8le diff\u00e9rente. Alors que la 570GT est avant tout destin\u00e9e \u00e0 des esth\u00e8tes qui poss\u00e8dent d\u00e9j\u00e0 plusieurs Porsche et Ferrari dans leur garage et qui, pour des questions de prestige, ach\u00e8tent toujours le mod\u00e8le le plus prestigieux de la gamme, la 540C s\u2019adresse plut\u00f4t \u00e0 une client\u00e8le qui ne peut ou qui ne souhaite s\u2019acheter qu\u2019une seule supercar.<\/p>\n

\nLes 570GT<\/a> et 570S sont certes un peu plus performantes mais la 540C suffit largement \u00e0 mon bonheur. A l\u2019heure de lui trouver un d\u00e9faut, je peux uniquement regretter que, contrairement aux McLaren 650 et 675, les 540 et 570 n\u2019existent pas en version spyder. Cela permettrait en effet d\u2019entendre encore mieux ses envo\u00fbtantes vocalises. Ce regret devrait cependant \u00eatre de courte dur\u00e9e. Il est en effet tr\u00e8s probable que les versions d\u00e9couvrables des 540 et 570 fassent leur apparition au prochain Salon de Gen\u00e8ve !<\/strong><\/p>\n
