A noter que m\u00eame sur ce dernier, le toit est escamotable mais contrairement au cabriolet, il doit prendre place dans la malle arri\u00e8re, diminuant d\u2019autant la pace disponible pour les bagages. Mon appr\u00e9hension concerne d\u2019ailleurs la place disponible pour ces derniers car en plus de mes affaires personnelles, je tiens \u00e0 emmener mon mat\u00e9riel photo. Mes craintes sont vite dissip\u00e9es, car en additionnant la capacit\u00e9 du compartiment situ\u00e9 sous le capot avant et celui situ\u00e9 \u00e0 l’arri\u00e8re, on dispose de 350 litres.<\/p>\n

La nouvelle Chevrolet Corvette dispose de deux coffres, car la grande r\u00e9volution de cette nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration est sans conteste la position du gros V8 6,2 litres atmosph\u00e9rique\u00a0de 482 ch. Rang\u00e9 depuis 69 ans sous le capot avant, il a d\u00e9sormais migr\u00e9 en position centrale arri\u00e8re. Si je n\u2019ai gu\u00e8re de doute sur ce que peut apporter cette mutation sur le comportement dynamique, je me demande si cette huiti\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration saura garder l\u2019identit\u00e9 propre qui a fait son succ\u00e8s.<\/p>\n

Les nouvelles proportions impos\u00e9es par le positionnement central du moteur ont oblig\u00e9 les designers Chevrolet \u00e0 repartir d\u2019une page blanche. Mais son faci\u00e8s, audacieux et futuriste, reste tr\u00e8s identifiable. Ses lignes sont plus tendues avec de hautes ailes arri\u00e8re body-build\u00e9es. Un look de supercar qui diffuse une impression de puissance.<\/p>\n

M\u00eame si j\u2019aurais appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 \u00eatre assis un peu plus bas, mes 195 cm ont trouv\u00e9 le moyen de s\u2019installer derri\u00e8re le volant carr\u00e9 de cette Corvette C8 Stingray. Les si\u00e8ges sont ventil\u00e9s, un must en cette saison estivale. Le cockpit s\u2019enroule litt\u00e9ralement autour de moi, me donnant l\u2019impression de faire corps avec la voiture. La longue align\u00e9e de boutons bordant le c\u00f4t\u00e9 droit de la console centrale accentue encore ce sentiment. La qualit\u00e9 des finitions et des mat\u00e9riaux a fait un bond en avant spectaculaire par rapport \u00e0 la Corvette de 7\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration<\/a>. Elle n\u2019a d\u00e9finitivement plus \u00e0 rougir face \u00e0 toutes ses concurrentes, qu’elles soient allemandes ou anglaises.<\/p>\n

Si mes premi\u00e8res impressions de conduite sont excellentes, le parcours autoroutier menant au Mans ne r\u00e9pondra pas \u00e0 toute mes questions concernant le comportement de l\u2019Am\u00e9ricaine. Mais un prochain essai complet sur nos routes devrait combler cette lacune. Les kilom\u00e8tres autoroutiers d\u00e9filent, dans un confort remarquable, juste perturb\u00e9 par le r\u00e9gulateur de vitesse, qui malheureusement n\u2019est pas adaptatif. La sonorit\u00e9 du V8 p\u00e9n\u00e8tre \u00e0 peine l\u2019habitacle ce qui permet de profiter pleinement de l\u2019irr\u00e9prochable syst\u00e8me audio Bose, m\u00eame si l\u2019utilisation de Apple CarPlay ou Android Auto n\u00e9cessite encore un c\u00e2ble.<\/p>\n

Je prends le temps de d\u00e9couvrir la flop\u00e9e de modes de conduite s\u00e9lectionnable \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019une molette situ\u00e9e sur la console centrale. Mais ce qui attire mon attention est le bouton \u00ab\u00a0Z\u00a0\u00bb plac\u00e9 sur la gauche du volant. Un peu \u00e0 l\u2019image des boutons M sur certaines sportives BMW, il permet par une simple pression d\u2019acc\u00e9der \u00e0 un mode totalement personnalisable. Apr\u00e8s une petite pause casse-croute, je d\u00e9cide de d\u00e9couvrir la voiture pour profiter du beau temps sur la derni\u00e8re centaine de kilom\u00e8tres. L\u2019ouverture n\u00e9cessite 16 secondes et peut \u00eatre effectu\u00e9e jusqu\u2019\u00e0 50 km\/h. Visiblement j\u2019ai d\u00fb d\u00e9passer cette vitesse plus rapidement que je ne le pensais, car alors que je suis en pleine acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration pour me lancer sur l\u2019autoroute, ma Corvette refuse cat\u00e9goriquement de d\u00e9passer les 100 km\/h. Le temps de ralentir prudemment sur la bande d\u2019arr\u00eat d\u2019urgence pour terminer la man\u0153uvre que d\u00e9j\u00e0 le coup\u00e9 rouge de mon coll\u00e8gue germanique a quitt\u00e9 l\u2019horizon.<\/p>\n

Je le rattrape avant la sortie \u00ab\u00a0Le Mans\u00a0\u00bb. A l\u2019approche du circuit, un membre du team Corvette nous attend pour nous remettre les divers laissez-passer et autorisations qui nous permettront de circuler librement dans l\u2019enceinte du circuit et d\u2019avoir acc\u00e8s aux diff\u00e9rents points strat\u00e9giques pour suivre la course. Notre point de chute se trouve au milieu du trac\u00e9 de 13,6 km, \u00e0 l\u2019Hippodrome du Mans. Arriv\u00e9s les premiers sur place, nous prenons possession de nos logements\u00a0; des conteneurs luxueusement am\u00e9nag\u00e9s, avec douche et toilettes. Chacun portant un nom mythique des 24h du Mans, je dormirai aux \u00ab\u00a0Hunaudi\u00e8res\u00a0\u00bb tandis que mon coll\u00e8gue Luca sera \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0Tertre Rouge\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 lav\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00e9quipe, ma Corvette est align\u00e9e devant mon conteneur aux cot\u00e9s de celles des autres invit\u00e9s arriv\u00e9s entre temps des quatre coins de l\u2019Europe. Une fabuleuse brochette d\u2019une quinzaine de C8 repr\u00e9sentant quasiment toutes les variantes de couleurs disponibles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Il est temps de nous rendre dans le paddock afin d\u2019assister aux derniers essais qualificatifs et au roulage de nuit. Nous sommes accueillis dans la loge surplombant le stand Corvette Racing par Oliver Gavin, quintuple vainqueur des 24 heures du Mans en cat\u00e9gorie GT avec Corvette. Il sera notre guide durant tout le week-end. Les fen\u00eatres de la loge nous offrent une vue plongeante sur la voie des stands, pile au-dessus du garage Corvette Racing devant lesquelles les deux C8R num\u00e9rot\u00e9es 63 et 64 s\u2019appr\u00eatent \u00e0 s\u2019\u00e9lancer pour les qualifications.<\/p>\n

Le moins que l\u2019on puisse dire est que le week-end commence \u00e0 merveille puisque 30 minutes plus tard, les deux C8R d\u00e9crochent les premi\u00e8re et deuxi\u00e8me places de l’Hyperpole en cat\u00e9gorie LMGT Pro. C\u2019est la joie dans le camp am\u00e9ricain, m\u00eame si tout le monde a conscience que la route jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e du double tour d\u2019horloge est encore tr\u00e8s longue et sem\u00e9e d\u2019emb\u00fbches.<\/p>\n

Traditionnellement, les voitures des 24h du Mans ne roulent pas le vendredi. Oliver Gavin en profite pour nous faire une visite du stand Corvette. L\u2019occasion de voir travailler les \u00e9quipes, discuter bri\u00e8vement avec les pilotes et d\u00e9couvrir tranquillement les coulisses du Mans avant le stress de la course. Nous y retournerons durant la course, ce sera une tout autre ambiance. Le team est en train de s\u2019entra\u00eener \u00e0 changer les pneus, disques et plaquettes de frein sur un des bolides jaunes\u00a0; il faut moins d\u2019une minute, pour rentrer la voiture dans le box, ex\u00e9cuter la man\u0153uvre et la remettre en piste\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Vendredi, c\u2019est aussi le jour o\u00f9 tous les pilotes se retrouvent au centre-ville du Mans pour la fameuse parade des Pilotes. Une immense f\u00eate populaire dans une ambiance incomparable, les h\u00e9ros du week-end d\u00e9filant \u00e0 bord de v\u00e9hicules sans toit. Les pilotes Chevrolet se pr\u00e9sentent \u00e0 bord d’une ancienne Renault (!) ainsi que d’une Chevrolet Camaro<\/a>, suivis d\u2019un exemplaire de chaque g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de Corvette. Un spectacle haut en couleurs, que j\u2019ai le luxe de pouvoir admirer depuis une loge priv\u00e9e, Place de la R\u00e9publique, une coupe de champagne \u00e0 la main ! Nous retournons \u00e0 l\u2019hippodrome pour une soir\u00e9e BBQ et une nuit bien reposante avant le d\u00e9part de la course qui sera donn\u00e9 sur le coup de 16 heures samedi apr\u00e8s-midi.<\/p>\n
