Pour combler notre manque d\u2019exp\u00e9rience, j\u2019ai fait appel \u00e0 mon vieil ami Bertrand Mayer, amateur averti et propri\u00e9taire de plusieurs v\u00e9hicules de marque Land Rover. Je l\u2019ai perdu de vue depuis une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, mais je me souviens de ses fascinants r\u00e9cits de voyage en Defender, dans le d\u00e9sert. Bertrand a tout de suite \u00e9t\u00e9 enthousiasm\u00e9 par le projet auquel il a associ\u00e9 Marc Blaser, son pr\u00e9parateur sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 Land-Rover. Ce dernier exploite le City Garage \u00e0 Neuch\u00e2tel.<\/p>\n

Avec Bertrand et Marc, nous tenons deux v\u00e9ritables experts. Aucune de nos questions, tant sur les anciens Defender que sur leur conduite hors des sentiers battus, ne restent sans r\u00e9ponse. Malheureusement, juste avant de prendre possession de notre Defender d\u2019essai, la neige est tomb\u00e9e abondamment jusqu\u2019en plaine et il est impossible de trouver un endroit pour un essai dans le terrain.<\/p>\n

Finalement, Marc r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 nous concocter un programme exceptionnel qui nous fera vite oublier d\u2019avoir d\u00fb remettre \u00e0 plus tard un v\u00e9ritable essai tout-terrain. Le d\u00e9fi qu\u2019il nous propose est de tenter de rejoindre la M\u00e9tairie du Milieu, situ\u00e9e \u00e0 1\u2019400 m\u00e8tres d’altitude, sur la montagne de Chasseral. Cette ferme-restaurant, tenue par Christelle et Nicolas Kr\u00e4henb\u00fchl, est actuellement ferm\u00e9e en raison des restrictions dues \u00e0 la crise sanitaire. L\u2019acc\u00e8s se fait depuis Cort\u00e9bert, mais les quatre derniers kilom\u00e8tres ne sont pas praticables en raison des importantes quantit\u00e9s de neige. Le nouveau Defender sera-t-il capable de relever le d\u00e9fi\u00a0?<\/p>\n

Nous nous donnons rendez-vous au petit matin devant le garage de Marc, Faubourg de l\u2019h\u00f4pital \u00e0 Neuch\u00e2tel. Anciennement d\u00e9nomm\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Grand garage de la Promenade\u00a0\u00bb, la fa\u00e7ade du City garage est si pittoresque qu\u2019une photo s\u2019impose, tandis que mes camarades de jeu pr\u00e9parent le mat\u00e9riel. Pelles, sangles, cordes s\u2019ajoutent au treuil et plaques \u00e0 sable d\u00e9j\u00e0 install\u00e9s sur le Defender de Bertrand. Je commence \u00e0 avoir mes premiers doutes quant \u00e0 cette aventure\u2026<\/p>\n

Bertrand profite de la route cantonale en direction de Cort\u00e9bert pour d\u00e9couvrir le nouveau Defender. Il semble plut\u00f4t convaincu puisqu\u2019apr\u00e8s une trentaine de kilom\u00e8tres \u00e0 son volant il me l\u00e2che\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Je pourrais bien craquer\u00a0! \u00bb. Mais attention, il n\u2019a pas imagin\u00e9 une seule seconde se s\u00e9parer de son \u00ab\u00a0vieux\u00a0\u00bb Defender\u2026 mais plut\u00f4t de remplacer le vieillissant Land Rover Discovery qu\u2019il utilise au quotidien. Depuis Cort\u00e9bert, la route enneig\u00e9e, plus \u00e9troite et sinueuse, traverse une for\u00eat dans un d\u00e9cor de carte postale. Nous arrivons sans encombre au Pr\u00e9 de Cort\u00e9bert, point de rendez-vous avec Christelle et Nicolas, descendus \u00e0 notre rencontre. Ils vivent \u00e0 l\u2019ann\u00e9e \u00e0 la M\u00e9tairie du Milieu avec deux jeunes enfants et moult animaux, et chacun poss\u00e8de son Defender. Lorsque qu\u2019ils se sont install\u00e9s pour exploiter la m\u00e9tairie, le choix de ce v\u00e9hicule rustique, indestructible et passe partout s\u2019est tr\u00e8s vite impos\u00e9.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est parti ! Le convoi s\u2019\u00e9lance doucement pour les quatre derniers kilom\u00e8tres de route tr\u00e8s enneig\u00e9e. Deux Defender ancienne g\u00e9n\u00e9ration pr\u00e9c\u00e8dent le nouveau. De mon c\u00f4t\u00e9, j\u2019ai pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 laisser le volant de notre Land Rover Defender 110 P400<\/a> \u00e0 l\u2019exp\u00e9riment\u00e9 Marc pour d\u00e9buter ce parcours difficile. Cette pr\u00e9caution n\u2019a pas suffi puisqu\u2019\u00e0 peine une centaine de m\u00e8tres plus loin, c\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 le premier \u00ab plantage \u00bb. Marc doit sortir la pelle pour d\u00e9gager le v\u00e9hicule. Le premier constat est clair : les voies du nouveau Defender sont plus larges que celles de l\u2019ancien si bien que cela l\u2019emp\u00eache de rouler dans les profondes traces creus\u00e9es par son a\u00een\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Vite d\u00e9gag\u00e9, le convoi repart \u00e0 bonne allure sur le plateau enneig\u00e9. La conduite semble ais\u00e9e, si bien que je d\u00e9cide de prendre le volant. Marc me conseille de garder une bonne distance entre les voitures lors des passages d\u00e9licats. Le d\u00e9nivel\u00e9 de la route augmente et se fait plus sinueux. Lors d\u2019une relance, je l\u00e8che le c\u00f4t\u00e9 amont du mur de neige, ce qui me renvoie directement en contre bas, exactement l\u00e0 o\u00f9 je voulais \u00e9viter d\u2019aller. Je tente de mettre les gaz, mais mon inexp\u00e9rience associ\u00e9e \u00e0 une certaine crainte de finir au bas de la pente me font h\u00e9siter. Trop tard, le Defender se pose litt\u00e9ralement sur le mur de neige et malgr\u00e9 le blocage du diff\u00e9rentiel et toutes les aides \u00e9lectroniques, il ne bouge plus.<\/p>\n

Une bonne demi-heure de pelletage plus tard, rien n\u2019y fait\u00a0! Notre Defender de 400 chevaux patine d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9ment. Il faut sortir les sangles et faire revenir le Defender de Nicolas pour nous sortir de ce mauvais pas. Je sugg\u00e8re \u00e0 Marc de reprendre le volant mais sa grande exp\u00e9rience ne nous emp\u00eache pas de renouveler l\u2019exercice \u00e0 plusieurs reprises. Il est environ 14h30 quand, enfin, nous apercevons la M\u00e9tairie. Un dernier remorquage et nous y voil\u00e0\u2026 D\u00e9fi relev\u00e9, quoique\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Le temps de se r\u00e9chauffer \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, c\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 l\u2019heure d\u2019un premier bilan. Clairement, le nouveau Defender s\u2019est montr\u00e9 moins \u00e0 l\u2019aise dans cet exercice neigeux que son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur. Mais pouvait-il en \u00eatre autrement ? Probablement pas, car trop de param\u00e8tres jouent en d\u00e9faveur du \u00ab petit \u00bb nouveau. Le premier est clairement sa monte pneumatique d\u2019origine, plus large et au profil d\u00e9vou\u00e9 \u00e0 la route et donc moins adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 ces conditions. A cela s\u2019ajoutent, comme d\u00e9j\u00e0 mentionn\u00e9, des voies plus importantes qui l\u2019emp\u00eachent de rouler dans les traces creus\u00e9es par les Defender des propri\u00e9taires de la M\u00e9tairie. Ensuite il y a le poids, puisque la diff\u00e9rence entre les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations avoisine les 500 kg. Finalement, dans cet exercice sp\u00e9cifique, seuls les 400 chevaux du nouveau Defender parlent en sa faveur et encore\u2026Bertrand nous explique : \u00ab Dans ces conditions, le couple \u00e0 tr\u00e8s bas r\u00e9gime et surtout la sensation du pied sur l\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rateur sont primordiaux. Avec mon Defender, je reste souvent en 1\u00e8re ou 2\u00e8me courte, sans m\u00eame mettre le pied sur la p\u00e9dale des gaz, juste un filet de temps en temps pour relancer la machine. \u00bb\u00a0<\/p>\n

La discussion entre passionn\u00e9s est tr\u00e8s anim\u00e9e, mais il ne faut pas tarder, la nuit tombe vite en cette saison. J\u2019avais imagin\u00e9 na\u00efvement que la descente serait plus facile, ce fut exactement le contraire. Le nouveau Defender est le premier \u00e0 s\u2019immobiliser au travers de la route, mais en d\u00e9sormais fin routinier, chacun sait d\u00e9j\u00e0 ce qu\u2019il doit faire. Les choses se compliquent quand le Defender de Bertrand, qui ouvre la route, se bloque dans les mauvaises traces laiss\u00e9es lors d\u2019un plantage du matin. Inutile de compter sur le nouveau Defender qui le suit pour le sortir de ce mauvais pas. Bertrand nous fait alors une d\u00e9monstration de treuillage et quelques minutes plus tard, le revoil\u00e0 sur le bon chemin. Ce sera le seul \u00ab\u00a0incident\u00a0\u00bb de la journ\u00e9e pour l\u2019a\u00een\u00e9 des Defender.<\/p>\n
