Defender\u00a0! La seule \u00e9vocation de ce nom d\u00e9clenche imm\u00e9diatement une avalanche d\u2019\u00e9motions. Difficile de trouver un v\u00e9hicule qui \u00e9voque autant et unanimement les m\u00eames sentiments d\u2019\u00e9vasion et d\u2019aventure et cela parmi toutes les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations depuis des d\u00e9cennies.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s un arr\u00eat de production de quelques ann\u00e9es, Land Rover revient sur le march\u00e9 avec un Defender r\u00e9invent\u00e9, plus adapt\u00e9 au march\u00e9 actuel. Cette nouvelle mouture pr\u00e9serve-t-elle la fabuleuse r\u00e9putation de baroudeur indestructible de ses illustres pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs ? C\u2019est ce que nous avons essay\u00e9 de savoir au volant de la version la plus puissante disponible actuellement, dot\u00e9e de 400 ch !<\/p>\n

L\u2019interpr\u00e9tation moderne du Defender ne se reconnait pas du premier coup d\u2019\u0153il. Il reprend la ligne stylistique des nouveaux mod\u00e8les de la marque mais avec des touches classiques qui rappellent ses a\u00efeux. L\u2019ensemble offre une esth\u00e9tique propre et tr\u00e8s novatrice avec des lignes droites et des formes carr\u00e9es qui lui offrent d\u2019excellents angles d\u2019attaque pour affronter le terrain. Son regard est moins soutenu que celui de ses anc\u00eatres avec des phares ronds au yeux mi-clos. Ses feux arri\u00e8re verticaux, son hayon \u00e0 charni\u00e8res lat\u00e9rales et sa roue de secours apparente sont autant d\u2019hommages au pass\u00e9. Le Land Rover Defender est produit en deux variantes de carrosserie : le 90, court, avec 3 portes et le 110, long, avec 5 portes. C\u2019est cette derni\u00e8re, \u00e9quip\u00e9e en option de 7 places (CHF 1’440.-), que nous testons aujourd\u2019hui.<\/p>\n

Sous le capot plat de cette version P400 se trouve un moteur 6 cylindres en ligne de 3 litres suraliment\u00e9 par turbocompresseur qui d\u00e9livre une puissance de 400 ch et 550 Nm de couple. La transmission aux 4 roues se fait via une bo\u00eete automatique ZF \u00e0 8 rapports avec r\u00e9ducteur, d’un diff\u00e9rentiel central et d’un blocage actif du diff\u00e9rentiel arri\u00e8re. Une telle motorisation sur un v\u00e9hicule de plus de 2,5 tonnes n\u2019est logiquement pas tr\u00e8s \u00e9conome en \u00e9nergie fossile. A moins de faire tr\u00e8s attention, il est quasiment impossible de descendre sous la barre des 12 l\/100km, un chiffre qui naturellement prend l\u2019ascenseur lorsque vous quittez les sentiers battus. Pour rem\u00e9dier \u00e0 cette g\u00eane, Land Rover propose des moteurs moins gourmands, alors qu’\u00e0 l’oppos\u00e9, un V8 devrait faire son apparition cette ann\u00e9e pour coiffer la gamme !<\/p>\n

Il est temps de grimper \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du Defender. On se plonge dans une atmosph\u00e8re de qualit\u00e9 et une technologie qui n’existait pas auparavant : mat\u00e9riaux soign\u00e9s et de haute qualit\u00e9, grand \u00e9cran tactile, instrumentation num\u00e9rique, d\u00e9marrage par bouton-poussoir, connectivit\u00e9, prises de connexion USB \u00e0 profusion et m\u00eame r\u00e9troviseur central pouvant se transformer en \u00e9cran. On y trouve aussi quelques clins d’\u0153il au pass\u00e9, comme les vis apparentes qui renforcent la robustesse des moulures de porte et de console centrale ou encore la barre d’appui devant le si\u00e8ge du passager avant. A vrai dire, je ne m\u2019attendais pas \u00e0 autant de luxe \u00e0 bord d\u2019un Defender, qui par d\u00e9finition, se voulait jusqu\u2019ici spartiate et robuste. La force de cet int\u00e9rieur est qu\u2019il semble tr\u00e8s solide (notamment gr\u00e2ce aux parties en magn\u00e9sium) tout en \u00e9tant bien dessin\u00e9 et tr\u00e8s fonctionnel.<\/p>\n

Pour quelqu’un qui conna\u00eet l’ancien Defender, la position de conduite de cette nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration est d’un confort m\u00e9connaissable. Haut perch\u00e9 sur des si\u00e8ges rembourr\u00e9s, un p\u00e9dalier dans l\u2019axe, une excellente visibilit\u00e9, tout a \u00e9t\u00e9 revu. Au niveau du ch\u00e2ssis, la copie a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 retravaill\u00e9e\u00a0: Le ch\u00e2ssis compos\u00e9 de poutres et de traverses a c\u00e9d\u00e9 la place \u00e0 une carrosserie autoportante en aluminium. Les essieux rigides ont \u00e9t\u00e9 remplac\u00e9s par des suspensions pneumatiques adaptatives, ce qui, en plus d’un grand confort de conduite, permet de modifier la garde au sol afin de s\u2019adapter au terrain rencontr\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Avant de partir \u00e0 l\u2019aventure, c\u2019est en milieu urbain que d\u00e9bute mon apprentissage du Defender. Au vu de la taille de l\u2019engin, plus de 5 m de long avec la roue de secours et 2.1 m de large aux r\u00e9troviseurs, on peut imaginer que la t\u00e2che ne sera pas ais\u00e9e. Heureusement, de nombreuses aides \u00e0 la conduite facilitent les man\u0153uvres, comme par exemple la cam\u00e9ra 360 degr\u00e9s. Sur les routes et autoroutes, il offre un confort de premi\u00e8re classe qui fait de cette nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration un excellent alli\u00e9 sur les longues distances. Seuls quelques bruits d\u2019air, in\u00e9vitables avec ce CX de brique de lait, ne lui permettent pas de rivaliser avec une bonne berline premium.<\/p>\n

Au niveau du comportement dynamique, hormis l\u2019extr\u00eame d\u00e9multiplication de la direction, les sensations ressenties au volant sont l\u00e0 aussi plus proche d\u2019une Jaguar F-Pace SVR<\/a> que d\u2019un Defender d\u2019ancienne g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Il faut relever que la puissance – 400 ch – et le couple – 550 Nm – de notre voiture d\u2019essai contribuent pour beaucoup \u00e0 cet agr\u00e9ment de conduite. Mais je suis certain qu\u2019\u00e0 ce stade, ce qui vous int\u00e9resse est de connaitre le comportement du nouveau Defender hors des sentiers battus\u2026<\/p>\n

Nous avons pu confronter les deux derni\u00e8res g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de Defender dans des conditions extr\u00eames d\u2019enneigement, cela fera l\u2019objet d\u2019un prochain reportage ! Nous aurions \u00e9galement voulu tester ses capacit\u00e9s de franchissement sur un terrain accident\u00e9 mais cela n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 possible, ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 surpris par la neige en basse altitude d\u00e8s le troisi\u00e8me jour de l’essai. Ce que je peux affirmer, c\u2019est que sur le papier, tout semble parfait. En plus de la pr\u00e9sence des vitesses courtes et de porte-\u00e0-faux tr\u00e8s courts, diff\u00e9rents programmes pr\u00e9d\u00e9finis sont propos\u00e9s pour l’herbe, le gravier, la boue, la neige, le sable, les roches, et j\u2019en passe\u2026 Imaginez par exemple que vous souhaitiez traverser une rivi\u00e8re, vous s\u00e9lectionnez le mode \u00ab passage de gu\u00e9 \u00bb et l\u2019\u00e9lectronique s\u2019occupe de tout : la suspension se positionne en hauteur maximum, la r\u00e9ponse de l’acc\u00e9l\u00e9rateur est liss\u00e9e, la climatisation est bloqu\u00e9e en circuit interne et l’\u00e9cran du tableau de bord vous indique la hauteur de l’eau. Et si vous d\u00e9passez la profondeur maximale de 900 mm, une alerte retentit.<\/p>\n

Une profusion d\u2019\u00e9lectronique qui n\u2019avait naturellement pas place dans les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents Defender o\u00f9 il fallait comprendre ce qui se passait afin d\u2019actionner les bons leviers. Toutefois, les conducteurs aguerris pourront modifier chaque param\u00e8tre dans les modes de conduite personnalisables. Le r\u00e9glage de la garde au sol est quant \u00e0 lui facilement accessible via des boutons.<\/p>\n

Land Rover a red\u00e9fini compl\u00e8tement le cahier des charges du nouveau Defender. Dor\u00e9navant, le Defender n\u2019est plus seulement un 4×4 de franchissement destin\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019aventure, mais \u00e9galement un confortable SUV capable de se faufiler en ville aussi facilement qu’il peut escalader des montagnes ou affronter des d\u00e9serts. Une transformation plus qu\u2019une \u00e9volution, dans laquelle les habitu\u00e9s du Def\u2019 pur et dur risquent de ne plus se retrouver. Pour ces puristes, notre prochain reportage, qui mettra en sc\u00e8ne ce m\u00eame Defender avec ses pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs, r\u00e9serve quelques surprises.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On ne peut n\u00e9anmoins nier que le nouveau Defender est une belle r\u00e9ussite et qu’il figure sans doute parmi les v\u00e9hicules tout-terrain les plus d\u00e9sirables du march\u00e9 actuel.<\/b><\/p>\n
