Ford Explorer : le SUV am\u00e9ricain par excellence, \u00e9voquant les grands espaces de l’ouest am\u00e9ricain et ses pistes de terre interminables. En effet, la production de ce mod\u00e8le n’est pas anodine : plus de 7 millions d’exemplaires construits depuis 29 ans ! Pas de doute, on est bien dans la plus pure tradition du SUV \u00e0 l’am\u00e9ricaine\u00a0! La l\u00e8vre de protection en plastique mat courant sur les bas de caisse et pare-chocs soulignent son c\u00f4t\u00e9 tout-terrain. A l’inverse, la couleur \u00ab\u00a0Lucid Red\u00a0\u00bb (CHF 900.-) apporte une touche plus urbaine et originale \u00e0 ce Ford Explorer.<\/p>\n

Le Ford Explorer PHEV propose plusieurs modes pour g\u00e9rer l’entra\u00eenement hybride qu’on retrouve sur la plupart des v\u00e9hicules de m\u00eame type. En mode EV Auto, l’entra\u00eenement hybride est g\u00e9r\u00e9 automatiquement. En mode EV Now, le v\u00e9hicule ne va fonctionner qu’avec son moteur \u00e9lectrique, au contraire du mode EV Later qui va solliciter uniquement le moteur thermique. Enfin, en mode EV Charge, le moteur thermique va recharger la batterie.<\/p>\n

En utilisation \u00e9lectrique pure, la batterie de 13.1kWh a fourni une autonomie moyenne de 33km lors de notre essai, cette autonomie d\u00e9pendant fortement de la topographie des routes emprunt\u00e9es et des temp\u00e9ratures. Les 40km annonc\u00e9s par le constructeur sont donc plausibles. Mais attention, circuler en mode \u00e9lectrique n\u00e9cessitera une conduite douce et fluide, les quelques 2,5 tonnes de l’engin \u00e9tant mus par un moteur \u00e9lectrique de seulement 74kW (102ch). Une fois la batterie \u00e9puis\u00e9e, c’est le V6 3.0 litres Ecoboost qui prend le relais. Toutefois, la consommation de celui-ci est plut\u00f4t \u00e9lev\u00e9e\u00a0: pas moins de 14l\/100km relev\u00e9s sur un parcours mixte. Ceci peut s’expliquer par le poids \u00e9lev\u00e9 du v\u00e9hicule et son faible a\u00e9rodynamisme. Il conviendra donc de recharger la batterie le plus souvent possible afin de rouler en mode EV et \u00e9viter ainsi les longs trajets en mode thermique uniquement.<\/p>\n

En revanche, il faut reconna\u00eetre que le 3.0L V6 bi-turbo de 364ch s’av\u00e8re tr\u00e8s r\u00e9actif, m\u00eame dans les bas r\u00e9gimes, avec une sonorit\u00e9 assez plaisante. La bo\u00eete automatique \u00e0 10 rapports effectue normalement son travail en mode automatique, mais sa gestion en mode manuel est perfectible : le temps de r\u00e9action de la bo\u00eete est clairement trop long, les changements de rapport sont peu pr\u00e9cis et un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne particulier se produit au l\u00e2cher de l’acc\u00e9l\u00e9rateur : on a l’impression que le moteur continue sa mont\u00e9e en r\u00e9gime pendant une fraction de seconde \u00e0 l’instar de certains anciens moteurs turbo ; plut\u00f4t \u00e9tonnant et peu rassurant.<\/p>\n

Ce Ford Explorer poss\u00e8de les derni\u00e8res technologies d’assistances \u00e0 la conduite, comme la surveillance de l’angle mort, le r\u00e9gulateur de vitesse actif par reconnaissance des panneaux et informations fournies par la navigation embarqu\u00e9e. Des fonctions d’aides au parking sont aussi pr\u00e9sentes, comme le parking semi-automatis\u00e9. Mais celui-ci peut vite montrer ses limites car les places de parking de taille normale ne laissent que peu de marge \u00e0 un v\u00e9hicule de ce gabarit. Attention \u00e9galement aux conducteurs press\u00e9s dans leur man\u0153uvre en marche arri\u00e8re : le syst\u00e8me de freinage d’urgence peut se d\u00e9clencher de mani\u00e8re intempestive \u00e0 la vue d’un obstacle abord\u00e9 un peu trop vite.
